Bespoke Terms

1 - Pre Commission

1.1 Initial conversations will revolve around the piece required - the more information that can be given at this stage the smoother the process generally flows. Information that is very useful at this stage is includes:

  • required dimensions for the furniture piece;

  • any desired timbers (Knot can advise on what may be suitable);

  • overall style - this could take the form of photos of other pieces in the room or Pinterest style mood boards;

  • photos of the room where the furniture piece will reside;

  • address for where the furniture piece will reside (for calculating shipping costs).

1.2 Knot Design will be happy to provide an estimate on request for a given commission so that the client may ensure that the allotted budget is appropriate. This will likely be a price range to aim to encompass any options or variations that have been discussed in the initial conversations or deemed desirable/necessary by Knot Design. These estimates are non-binding and may change due to reasons including but not limited to:

  • change in scope of design works;

  • changes to timber selection;

  • changes to overall dimensions;

  • changes to joinery selection.

2 - Design Process

2.1 If the client is happy with the estimate given and would like to proceed with a full design commission, a design fee of £300 is charged at this stage.

2.2 The design fee covers the initial design(s) and two iterations to the design based on clients’ feedback

2.3 Any changes further than stated in 2.2 may be subject to further charge at an hourly rate.

2.4 If the client chooses not to proceed with the bespoke commission after the design stage, this fee is non-refundable.

2.5 If the bespoke commission proceeds, the design fee will be deducted from the total cost of the commission.

2.6 Once the design process is complete, Knot Design will send the client a set of technical drawings with the key dimensions annotated as well as digital renderings of the piece as may be appropriate.

2.7 Knot Design strongly advocates using locally sourced native timbers for all the furniture I build. If the client would like a non-native timber, a discussion would need to occur about its suitability and possible alternatives will be suggested.

3 - Payment Schedule

3.1 The payment schedule is as follows:

Design Fee
£300
payable upon appointing Knot Design for a bespoke commission

First Deposit
50% of the total value of the commission, minus the £250 design fee already paid
payable at the point of client signing off on the final design drawings

Second Deposit
remaining 50% of the total value of the commission
payable once commission is complete, before delivery is made

3.2 Knot Design will provide a bespoke link for the deposit payments on this website or and can be paid by credit card. Payment can also be made via invoice and bank transfer if preferred.

4 - Handcrafting your Furniture

4.1 Payment of the First Deposit will be taken as approval of the final designs by the client and Knot Design will then proceed to select and purchase the materials for the build.

4.2 Once the First Deposit has been paid, Knot Design will advise of the likely lead time for your furniture piece to be made.

4.3 Progress updates can be provided whenever required including workshop photos if the client is interested. Knot Design may use any process photos/videos of the commission piece for use in our social media unless expressly agreed with the client that I shall not.

4.2 Wood is a natural material and as such there will be variations in colour, tone and grain pattern from one board of timber to the next, even within the same species. Small markings in the timber are to be expected, such as pin knots or sapwood - these are aesthetic only and will not affect the functionality or longevity of the furniture piece.

5 - Delivery

5.1 The delivery cost for mainland UK will be included in the price quoted. If you require delivery outside of this area, or would like to collect your furniture from my London workshop then please let us know.

5.2 Once the piece is completed, the final invoice will be sent. Delivery will not be made until this is paid.

5.3 Knot Design will advise of potential delivery windows at this point and will make best efforts to offer the client flexibility.

5.4 If Knot Design and the client are unable to agree a delivery window within 10 working days of the completion date, then Knot Design may, at their discretion, make a charge to the client for storage of the furniture piece until the date that delivery can be made.

6 - Miscellaneous

6.1 Knot Design is unwilling to make direct replicas of existing pieces without express permission from the designer of the piece in question.
