Bespoke Frames for Artists
I'm occasionally approached by artists to make bespoke wooden frames for their work, and it's a type of commission I particularly enjoy. Smaller frame projects fit neatly into the gaps between my larger furniture commissions, and let me put beautiful offcuts of timber to good use - pieces too small for a table or cabinet, but perfect for a frame, with the added bonus of reducing waste in my London workshop. There's also real satisfaction in seeing a finished piece of art sitting in a frame I've made for it.
Each frame takes a different form depending on the piece it's for, but I usually keep the design simple, so the artwork stays the focus rather than the frame around it. I'll often add one small bespoke detail - finger-jointed corners, or a contrasting timber spline through a mitre joint - just enough to give the frame its own character.
