European Walnut Mid-Century Dining Table
A client with a beautiful period home in South Kensington, London approached me looking for a dark-toned, mid-century inspired dining table that could be deconstructed for when he relocated to a different continent years into the future. The rounded dining table is made throughout from European walnut and the frame can be disassembled for flat packing.
With cues taken from mid-century furniture, the table is designed in 6 pieces - the top, 2 legs and top stretchers and a single bottom rail for stability. These are all connected using fixings that are incredibly strong and completely hidden from view when using the table. The top has a lozenge shape - one of my favourites for showing off the transition from face grain to end grain in a board of solid timber. The legs flare out towards the bottom as a design detail and for stability, with a subtle chamfer to reduce the visual weight.
European walnut can often be markedly different from its continental cousin (American Black Walnut) and often will show much more colour variation. A gentle tint was applied highly-selectively to the top surface in order to bring out the richness of the browns and even out the overall finish.
