BRADSTOW - Round Coffee Table
BRADSTOW is a generously proportioned round coffee table, with an 80cm top that can be sized to suit your space. Shown here in sweet chestnut, it takes its scalloped, hand-carved surface from the flint stone walling found along the Kent coastline - carried across the edge of the top and down each of the four legs. It's available in a range of native British timbers, including oak, ash, elm, and London plane.
Bradstow started with a wall, not a tree. I'd been driving along the Kent coast and kept noticing the old flint walling - that dense, knapped texture that has been used in that part of England forcenturies. I wanted to see if I could bring that same tactile, weathered quality into timber, using a technique that's really about the tool rather than the material.
Every scalloped facet on this table is hand-carved, one at a time, across the edge of the top and down all four legs. It's slow work, and no two facets ever come out quite identical, which is exactly the point - it's meant to feel a little irregular, a little worn, the way flint does after a hundred years of weather.
I chose sweet chestnut for this piece because it's local to where the flint walls themselves stand, but Bradstow takes just as well to oak, ash, elm, or London plane, depending on the tone you're after in a room. And because every table is made to order, the 80cm top shown here can be sized up or down to fit your space properly, or can even be made in another shape entirely.
